Important News for 2016
Minister for Health Sussan Ley has announced that the Government will upgrade the National Immunisation Program to include the Quadrivalent (four strain) vaccine in 2016. This is the first time that government has choice a Quadrivalent over their traditional decision of a Trivalent (three strain) vaccine as part of their effort to provide the greatest amount of protection for those at risk during the flu season.
In 2015, there was a record 90,000 reported flu cases in Australia, 25,000 higher than the previous record of 65,000 in 2014. AVS will be supporting the government decision to expand the protection being offered and will also be offering the Quadrivalent vaccine (as well as the Trivalent) to all our clients.
We expect that supplies of the Quadrivalent to run out in 2016 so we encourage our clients to book as early as possible to avoid disappointment. The 2016 Southern Hemisphere flu vaccination strain recommendations have been put forward by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The WHO has recommended that trivalent vaccines for use in the 2016 influenza season
(Southern Hemisphere winter) contain the following: An A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus; An A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 (H3N2)-like virus; A B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus (belonging to the Victoria lineage)
For the Trivalent vaccine, this represents two changes to the 2015 Southern Hemisphere influenza strain. For Quadrivalent vaccines, the WHO have recommended changing one strain and add to the strains mentioned above the Phuket/3073/2013-like virus, A Yamagata lineage virus that was the B component of the trivalent vaccines for the Southern Hemisphere.
