2017 Influenza (Flu) Vaccine

Each year the World Health Organization (WHO) puts forward it recommendations for the composition of influenza virus for us in the Southern Hemisphere influenza season. The WHO has recommended that the following composition be used in the Southern Hemisphere Quadrivalent vaccine in 2017:

  • an A/Michigan/45/2015 (H1N1) pdm09 - like virus;
  • An A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 (H3N2) - like virus;
  • A B/Brisbane/60/2008 - like virus
  • A B/Phuket/3073/2013 - like virus

This represent one strain change to the 2016 Southern Hemisphere Quadrivalent vaccine strain.  AVS will be working with all manufacturers in 2017 to ensure that we have a guaranteed supply for our clients. Current estimates for availability of the vaccine in Australia is 2nd - 3rd week of March. With Easter and the school holidays taking place from the 2nd week of April, we highly recommend booking early to ensure you can receive the earliest vaccination slots available and the best preseason pricing.

Australian Vaccine Services only use the latest flu vaccination strains which are produced and provided by pharmaceutical companies that are authorised to provide vaccines in Australia. Any AVS left stock is destroyed at the end of July each year.
